Thoughts on Gravity Falls

This review is dedicated to Big Henry

Hello, everybody! I’m back! And it’s a sad time for all of us, Gravity Falls has ended. And I was thinking to myself, what episode should I look at in honor of it? And then I decided…why not look at it altogether!

(Gets booed by readers)

Yeah, yeah, I know it’s a quick way out, but come on, it’s freaking Gravity Falls! It’s one of those series that if I were to do a Top 10 list of the best episodes, I’d have a hard time finding which ones I loved most, it’s THAT good! But I also felt that this would also be the best way to talk about it so I don’t have to give spoilers to anyone who decided to watch it for the first time! So, with all that said, let’s get started!

Imagery:

I will admit, when I heard of Gravity Falls, the character designs didn’t really grab me. I was like ‘Oh hey, it’s like Regular Show except it’s in the woods…yeah…’ This was around the time that Adventure Time was getting popular, and I really wasn’t starting to get into the surreal type of humor that they were using, so I avoided it. But when I eventually got to watching it, I was freaking blown away by how great this animation looks! The backgrounds of the forest really stand out, especially with the lighting and shadows, and the character animation looks especially great, knowing when you’re supposed to feel for these characters. The designs of the different creatures they meet in the forest are also very creative and lead to many different possibilities. 5/5, Amazing

Writing:

You can’t have good animation without great writing! Like the animation, I was kind of worried of how the writing was going to work too, this was around the time most shows like Modern SpongeBob Squarepants and The Amazing World of Gumball had a similar rule in humor, thinking that being mean-spirited means getting a laugh. But luckily, when I watched the first episode, I think I had trouble breathing for how much I laughed. It’s hard to explain how good this writing is, the writers take every opportunity to put a joke in somewhere and they all pretty much hit a bullseye! But luckily they balance out the humor with thrills and emotion. There’s surprisingly a lot of emotion between the characters and a lot of scary imagery with the mystery element and different monsters. But they never go too far with either one, it’s a perfect balance. By the way, M.A. Larson worked on an episode of this series, Double Dipper, as the story man! It’s kind of a shame, because I really think this series was a better fit for him then My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. 5/5, Amazing

Cast:

I think this is one of those series where I can’t think of a single bad character in this series. Let’s start with Dipper and Mabel. I actually relate to both of them a lot! For Dipper, he’s a dorky kind of character with fascination of mystery and strange things, while Mabel simply loves life and anything that inhabits it. I like how even though Dipper and Mabel may sometimes argue, they really do care about each other a lot. Another interesting thing about them is that if you look closely in the series, there’s small scenes where either Dipper and Mabel are holding onto each other. Then we have Grunkle Stan, who’s a cynical con artist who owns the Mystery Shack. He is such a hilarious awful person with all the different lines he has, but he still cares a lot for his family. My personal favorite character is Soos, he may be naive, but he’s just so lovable and innocent. Wendy I really enjoy also, she’s a tomboy character but still cares a lot for her friends and can pull through if they need her. The other characters are too many to count, but each of them stand out in different, great ways. Even characters that seem unlikable on paper like Pacifica and Robbie can turn into very developed and funny characters! 5/5, Amazing

Final Rating:

Gravity Falls isn’t just one of the greatest animated TV series of all time, but one of the greatest TV series of all time. It has beautiful animation, smart writing and lovable characters. If you haven’t seen it yet, go watch it immediately. And even if the series has ended, it at least ended on the best note it can. Thanks, Alex Hirsch, you’re going to do great at Fox. 5/5, Amazing
